A GROUP of young scientists from Stockton Sixth Form College has won an award for research into the habits of a spotted moth that seeks out clean environments and is sensitive to pollution.
As part of the annual event, organised by the North-East Schools Industry committee, students spent a week at Durham University where they presented the results of their research to experts and answered questions.
The students, Daniel Hornby, Allan Fairlamb, Michelle Kennedy and James Storey, began studying the behaviour of the metallic-green five and six-spotted burnet moths during the summer. Second year science students Chris Tompkinson and Michael Hughes also received awards with distinction from the British Association for the Advancement of Science for the research and design of a web site.
David Sopher, of Teeside company BASF, helped Chris and Michael build their website.
They spent the week interviewing industrialists, teachers and taking digital photographs portraying a range of industrial research by more than 50 students.
The awards were presented to the students yesterday by college principal Martin Clinton.
