A TERRITORIAL Army soldier yesterday received an award for his quick-thinking, which saved the life of a woman and her daughter.

Lance Corporal Anthony Simpson, 41, of Billingham, was first on the scene after a five-vehicle accident on the A66 near Scotch Corner in July.

He found 20-year-old Carole Scott, of Ravensworth, near Richmond, unconscious and trapped in her car with her baby Catriona.

L Cpl Simpson, who is a member of the Green Howards Tyne-Tees Regiment, said: "My training in the Territorial Army kicked in and after checking the woman I noticed that she had swallowed her tongue as well as having serious head and chest injuries. I managed to force her tongue out and started to revive her. After a while she started to show signs of consciousness."

Following the arrival of paramedics, L Cpl Simpson stayed with Ms Scott and her baby until they were transferred to an ambulance.

He was later praised by the crew for his professional assessment of the casualties.

L Cpl Simpson received a special commendation from the Commander-in-Chief, Land Forces, General Sir Michael Jackson, at a ceremony at Coulby Newham School last night.

Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Lord Crathorne, made the presentation.

L Cpl Simpson was nominated for the award by Captain Brian Noble, who commands B Company, which is based in Stockton Road, in Middlesbrough.

Captain Brian Noble said: "We are delighted that the commander-in-chief has recognised his actions. This commendation will form a part of his TA record."
