MYSTERY continues to surround the sudden closure of a popular pub in Richmond.

Clubs and societies which use rooms at the Black Lion, in Finkle Street, are concerned they will have nowhere to hold meetings if it fails to reopen.

The pub is one of the few in the town which has function rooms.

It has hosted the Rotary Club, Richmond Live, and the Easby Footpath Restoration Group, and has played a prominent role in community affairs.

However, the doors have remained locked this week and the blackboards outside, which usually list the food and beers available in the bar, have been cleared.

No one was available for comment at the premises yesterday, although owners Pubmaster did issue a brief statement.

"We are aware of and are very concerned about the issues regarding the Black Lion in Richmond," said a spokeswoman.

"At the moment, we are addressing these issues with the current tenant and we are endeavouring to keep the pub open to continue to provide a service for the local community."

Secretary of the Richmond Business and Tourism Association, Dr Mike Nicholls, urged the company to find a speedy solution.

"Losing the Black Lion would be a big blow for the town so we can only hope the problems are temporary," he said.

"The pub has always been a popular meeting place and there are few other places which can offer similar facilities."

l There was better news on Richmond's retail front with confirmation that the Spar shop in the Market Place is about to change hands.

Choices, based in the YMCA building, is poised to take over the premises, bringing a range of home entertainment to residents.

A company spokeswoman said: "As it is a larger store, it is likely we will be recruiting extra staff."
