NINE players from Darlington Mowden Park's under 16 girls' rugby team have been selected for the North East of England regional squad.

They were invited to the regional trials at Bullocksteads, Newcastle last Sunday and all have been asked to train on a weekly basis with the 25-strong squad.

This could lead to them playing in the regional team and the Lichfield National 10s, when England scouts will be present.

Their invitation to the regional trials came as a result of their outstanding performances in the Durham county team.

The successful Mowden girls are Abby Blackburn, Jenna Breakingbury, Laura Collings, Ally Cull, Helen Grainge, Amber Hyde, Nicola Jackson, Rosie Mangle and Ashleigh Wright.

Anita Blackburn, Mowden Park's under 16 girls' secretary, said: "Everyone at Mowden Park is tremendously proud of the girls and their achievement.

"The regional trials were hard, rigorous and competitive and they have done exceptionally well to be selected.

"They were fighting for places with the best players from Durham, Tyne and Wear and Cleveland.

"I am looking forward to watching them play at this high level and have no doubt that they will continue to be a credit to the club, their coaches and, indeed, the town.
