DESPITE icy weather conditions the first week of kerbside recycling in the Harrogate district got off to a good start.

The trial newspaper and magazine kerbside collection scheme was launched last Wednesday and already lorry loads of material have been removed from households in Ripon, Boroughbridge and Pateley Bridge.

Harrogate Borough Council is operating the trial for a year in partnership with North Yorkshire organisations Yorwaste and Todd Waste Management. Simon Johnson, the council's head of environment, said there has been a positive response.

Some areas have experienced slight delays in receiving their collection bags due to the hazardous road conditions.

Mr Johnson said: "We regret the delays, but our contractors are working hard to ensure all residents will receive bags before their scheduled collection day."
