JACK and Betty Greathead were lucky to celebrate a day of being married.
They were spending their wedding night in rooms lent to them by a friend when an air raid sent them to a shelter. After the all-clear was sounded they were woken again, this time by an air raid warden who had seen light through their curtains.
This week, the couple are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary at their home in Great Ayton, where the shelves are full of cards from friends and well-wishers, including the Queen, and a bouquet of flowers from their landlord, Broadacres Housing Association.
There were joined for a celebratory meal at the Royal Oak Hotel by 28 guests, all but two of whom were family members.
