A PUNCH-UP in a village pub, which involved a rival landlord, ended in an attack on police, a court heard yesterday.

Harrogate magistrates heard that a fight broke out between a regular at the Punch Bowl, in Marton-cum-Grafton, near Boroughbridge, and Ian Gill, the landlord of a rival bar - The Crown Inn a few miles away in the village of Great Ouseburn, near York.

The court heard that David Almond was angry to see Mr Gill in his local as he had barred him from The Crown Inn.

A fight broke out and a friend of Mr Gill's, Barry Poole, intervened.

Poole punched Mr Almond and attacked another drinker.

When the police arrived he headbutted one officer and struggled with another.

He was threatened with CS gas as he was put into a police van.

Poole, 43, admitted threatening behaviour, assault on police and resisting police.

In defence Steven Culleton said Poole, who runs a vehicle cleaning company, was filled with remorse, regret and shame and he had written to the police apologising for his behaviour.

Poole was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid community work and pay a fine of £250 with £250 compensation to one policeman and £100 costs.
