TO BE or not to be a wrestler - that is the question posed when Hamlet gets ready to rumble in the ring tomorrow.

North-East theatre company Site Specified presents Wrestling Shakespeare, a play combining the Bard's work with WWF-style American wrestling.

The hour-long play, a live theatre work with video inserts, is part of the University of Sunderland's Concerts on Campus season.

It is the story of a wrestler who speaks only quotes from Hamlet. He delivers the play as he wrestles his opponents, battling with the confrontation between cultures.

The play's Newcastle-based writer and director, Anton Hecht, said: "The work is philosophically challenging - but is still great fun for all.

"It appeals to a wide age range. After a highly successful run in Hull it was booked immediately to return again."

The play is also a homecoming for one of its actors. Sean Kenney, who graduated from the University of Sunderland in 1999, will appear as Hulk Hamlet.

The play is in the university's Bede Theatre, Ryhope Road, Sunderland, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £7, or £5 for concessions and £3 students, and are available from Ingrid Fairfax, on 0191-515 3593, or at the door.
