BRITISH Airways flew back into the black yesterday with a turnaround on its profits.

But it warned the City not to expect too much in the near future as it anticipates this year to be "tougher" than last.

Pre-tax profits for the three months to December 31 came in at £25m, against losses of £160m the same time the previous year. Turnover edged up one per cent to £1.86bn.

BA added that in the absence of hostilities in the Middle East, it expects its current financial year to be profitable. But the group warned it expected the business environment in 2003 to be tougher than last year and is still not anticipating any growth in revenues.
