A PLAN to attract more visitors to one of Hartlepool' oldest churches has been given the go-ahead.

Work will begin shortly on a project to create information displays and better lighting and access at the 12th Century St Hilda's Church, on the Headland.

Visitors will be able to learn about the church's history through displays and interactive screens.

The project is being funded with £488,000 from the North Hartlepool Partnership and £30,000 has been pledged by St Hilda's congregation.

The scheme has been devised by consultants Past Forward, and architect Ron Sims.

Once the project is finished, visitors will enter through the reopened west door at the front of the church. Once inside, they will be able to watch a video introduction to the church featuring presentations by parishioners.

Display panels at either side of the building will tell the story of the church through the eyes of historical characters.

Visitors will also be able to walk around the church listening to a commentary.

The Reverend Peter Kashouris, rector of St Hilda's, said: "This project will help make the church even more accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, in a way which is stimulating and sensitive."

The project is expected to be finished by the summer.
