PEOPLE were encouraged to adopt new attitudes at a health event yesterday.

Easington Primary Care Trust and Murton Welfare Association organised the event at The Glebe Centre, Murton.

It included checks by health visitors, a walk, stress-busting taster sessions, complementary therapy taster sessions, advice on giving up smoking, a healthy buffet and a salsa dance session.

Claire Mathews, health promotion specialist for Easington Primary Care Trust, said: "In Easington, death due to coronary heart disease is 40 per cent higher than the rest of the country, and it is the biggest single cause of death.

"Exercise and diet are important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and minimising the risk of heart disease.

"Health workers were on hand to check blood pressure and offer advice and support to those people who wished to lose weight, give up smoking or adopt a healthier lifestyle."
