YOUNG County Durham brass musicians will hone their technique at the weekend with one of the country's leading band conductors.

Nicholas Childs, conductor of the Black Dyke Band, will lead a workshop for young players at County Hall, Durham, on Sunday.

It is hoped to have young people from most of the county's 26 brass bands taking part in the workshop.

It will be the third workshop given by Mr Childs, who was so impressed with the response and talent he found at his first workshop that he wanted to follow it up with more.

"Nick's workshops usually attract about 50 young players aged from 11 to 25, of all abilities from un-graded through to diploma level,'' said Alan Hood, Durham County Council's music development officer.

"As usual, he's bringing three of his Black Dyke principals - Lesley Howie tenor horn, Philip Goodwin tuba, and Morvern Gilchrist cornet."
