POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a crash that left a driver critically injured.
The 45-year-old woman, from Peterlee, County Durham, is in Newcastle General Hospital with serious head injuries.
The accident happened on Monday morning on the southbound carriageway of the A19, near Peterlee.
The woman's Rover 214 had just joined the trunk road when it ran into problems and had to pull over on the nearside lane - the road has no hard shoulder.
A Scania articulated truck ran into the back of the car, sending it spinning into a lamp post and down an embankment.
The woman's 23-year-old daughter, a front seat passenger, was released after treatment for shock and minor injuries at Hartlepool's University Hospital.
Police accident investigators want to hear from any witnesses, particularly anyone who passed the car while it was stationary. They are asked to call 0191-386 4929.
