PARENTS who let their children skip school are the focus of a campaign warning them they could face jail.
Starting this week, posters will be displayed on buses and the Metro system on Tyneside, warning parents that they could be prosecuted if their children do not attend school regularly.
Those found guilty face fines of up to £2,500 or up to three months in prison.
Gillian Maclauchlan, attendance initiatives development officer for Newcastle City Council, said the aim of the campaign was to highlight parental responsibility and get the message across that children who miss school, miss out.
The campaign, which is supported by Stagecoach and Nexus, was launched after truancy sweeps in the city centre found that seven out of ten pupils stopped for not being in school were with their parents.
