A SMALL black poplar tree was planted in Northallerton to symbolise a prosperous future for the Hambleton District.

The sapling marks the launch of the Hambleton Community Plan - a long term vision aiming to promote the social, economic and environmental well-being of the district.

The local strategic partnership, comprising many organisations, councils and agencies, has presented the plan in its draft form, which will be open to public consultation during the next two months.

Hambleton residents will be able to question the plan's five themes - prosperous community, vibrant community, sustainable community, safe community and healthy community.

Partnership leader and deputy leader of Hambleton District Council, Councillor Arthur Barker planted the rare species of tree with help from Stephen Hall and Louise Kaye, of Applegarth school.

The black poplar is a target species of the Hambleton Biodiversity Action Plan.

With fewer than 8,000 black poplars left in the country, residents are being urged to help preserve the remaining species, as well as grow saplings from cuttings.

Anyone who could offer planting ground for a sapling, is asked to call Christopher Lowe on (01642) 701832.
