PEOPLE are being given the chance to have their say on how to tackle the region's growing waste problem.

Local people, businesses and organisations are being urged to attend a meeting at the Golden Lion Hotel, in Northallerton, next Wednesday, to discuss the draft regional waste strategy, "Let's Take It From The Tip".

The strategy has been drawn up by the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly following input from local authorities, businesses and environmental groups. The final document will be produced in April.

The meeting in Northallerton, which will run from 2pm to 4pm and then from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, is one of a series of workshops being held across the region during February, with a March 24 deadline set for comments on the strategy.

Figures show the Yorkshire region is the worst performing area in England when it comes to recycling and composting, with only seven per cent of rubbish being recycled compared to about 16 per cent in the south-east.

"We all produce waste, so everyone has a valuable role when it comes to finding better ways of managing it," said assembly chairman Peter Box.
