THREE pupils from the same school have shown creative flair to win a writing competition.

Pupils at Nevilles Cross Primary School, Durham, were invited to enter the contest by the Team Players theatre company when it visited the school in December.

The group performed a play called The Case of the Missing Plot, and asked the youngsters to apply what they had learnt by rewriting Little Red Riding Hood as a horror story.

They also encouraged pupils at 70 other schools in the region to do the same.

Out of 1,000 entries, the winner was named as Nevilles Cross pupil Stephen Smith, aged nine.

Fellow pupils Katie Bartle, 11, and Fiona McGlade, nine, also won their age categories.

The youngsters each received an individual prize, and in addition, Stephen won a free performance worth £280 for his school.

Headteacher Hazel Bullock said: "They had to use their creative skills and remember everything they learnt through the production about how to write in different genres.

"I am absolutely delighted and thrilled that we had three winners. Both performances were brilliant - the kids were thoroughly enthused by them."
