A SCHEME that takes books to housebound readers is appealing for more County Durham volunteers.
More than 40 Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS) volunteers deliver more than 500 books and audio tapes each year to 120 people who cannot get out because of age, illness or disability - but more are needed.
The scheme's regional operations manager Josephine Rutherford said: "WRVS is currently looking for people who may be able to help us with Books on Wheels.
"Volunteers work in teams of two, a driver and delivery person, using their own private car.
"The books are delivered one morning or afternoon per week and the average time taken is about two to three hours.
"It's not just a book service, as many volunteers will tell you, it's very much a social visit too - a chance to have a quick chat and to make sure all is well with the recipient.''
The WRVS offers full training, volunteers can claim mileage and there is a no claims bonus protection scheme.
The WRVS also holds get-togethers for volunteers so they can discuss various aspects of the charity's work.
