FOUR years of hard work paid off for community leaders at the weekend with the opening of a first-class community centre.

The refurbished St Columba's Church and Clifton Community Centre in Darlington, was opened to the public on Saturday. The development has replaced an outdated building and is expected to be used by more than 200 people a week.

Fundraising efforts to provide the modern building started in 1998 and support has come from local people and various grant-giving trusts.

The centre includes a kitchen, community hall, coffee bar and offices.

A spokesman for the Clifton Centre Community Association said: "Within the community centre we will provide recreation, leisure activities and advanced education.

"This will be made possible with the support of Darlington College of Technology and Sure Start."
