THE Rotary Club of Darlington has raised thousands of pounds to help blind and partially-sighted people.

A series of fundraising nights was held by the club to raise £2,200 for the Talking Newspaper for the Blind, which is produced at The Northern Echo offices in Priestgate, Darlington.

Former president of the Rotary Club, Lakhindar Singh, is a retired eye surgeon at Darlington Memorial Hospital.

He said: "I have always dealt with people with eye problems and I wanted to do something to help."

A cheque was presented to representatives from the Talking Newspaper for the Blind at a presentation which was held at Darlington Town Hall.

The money was used to buy a fast audio scanner for the newspaper to enable them to copy seven tapes every three minutes.

A commemoration plaque was also presented to the group which will be attached to the scanner.
