A COUPLE who were brought together by the Second World War have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

David Smith, 80, was serving in the Army and his wife Alice, 79, was a member of the Navy, Army and Airforce Institute (Naffi), when they met at Northcotes Aerodrome, near Grimsby.

Mrs Smith, from Esh Winning, had wanted to join the Wrens, but was turned down on medical grounds. She said it was fated that she should end up in the Naffi.

"If I'd joined the Wrens, I probably wouldn't have met David," she said.

"He played the drums and sang and I was quite taken by him. We had only known each other four months when we got married."

Mrs Smith said her mother was against the marriage. "She said I was marrying a foreigner because he was a 'Scot," she added.

The couple, who live in Esh Winning, and have six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, were taken out for a celebratory meal by their three daughters.
