BANDS in Darlington will get the chance to have their music heard by record label representatives at a free event taking place next week.

Generator, the North-East music development agency, is holding a music seminar and concert at the Arts Centre, in Vane Terrace, from 2pm on Wednesday.

Representatives of Sony, Atlantic, BMG and Independiente will be at the event to listen to groups' demo tapes and CDs.

The seminar, entitled How to Give the Music Industry What it Wants, will give young musicians advice on how to get a record deal.

From 7.30pm, local bands, including The Offbeats, Last Chance Texaco and We Start Fires, will perform.

"The day is part of Generator's aim to celebrate the strong local music scene which exists in Darlington," said Jo Thornton, from Generator.

Bands interested in attending should send their demos beforehand to Generator North-East, Black Swan Court, 69 Westgate Road, Newcastle NE1 1SG.
