PAINTINGS, pottery and textiles created by more than 80 artists have gone on display in a Bishop Auckland gallery.

The exhibitors in the McGuiness Gallery in the town hall all use the services of County Durham Care.

A total of 175 pieces of work created by individuals and groups from centres around the county have been brought together for the latest Appreciating Ability exhibition.

Durham County Council chairman Councillor Charlie Magee, who opened the display yesterday, said: "The exhibition is about celebrating and appreciating people's abilities, it is not purely about art.

"However, there are pictures and pottery on show which would quite easily stand alongside any professional artist's work."

A council spokesman said: "The Appreciating Ability exhibitions are held as a tribute to the work that goes on within County Durham Care and a credit to the skills and abilities of the people who access our services."

The exhibition continues until Saturday, March 8.
