Hambleton Ales North Yorkshire League: A second team gave a helping hand to its first stringers bidding for the First Division title.

The boost for second-placed Harrogate Squash came when their second team surprisingly defeated league leaders Bedale 2-1.

Despite the setback Bedale still lead the table with 130 points from 13 matches. But Harrogate Squash first team, now eight points behind, have a match in hand.

A maximum of 12 points are available from each match.

Scores Harrogate Squash II 2 Bedale 1 (Harrogate names first): Martin Wickenden beat Phil Martin 9-0, 6-9, 9-4, 9-1; Dave Dodwell lost to Dave Smiley 9-4, 9-3, 7-9, 2-9, 7-9; Bob Peacock beat Alan Peirson 9-1, 9-0, 9-3.

Harrogate Squash first team, who have lost just once so far this season, kept their bandwaggon rolling with a 2-1 away win over third placed Otley.

In Division Two Thirsk are clear leaders, currently 12 points ahead of Pateley Bridge.

And in Division Three newcomers Boroughbridge look likely to win promotion at the first attempt, despite losing to fellow newcomers Catterick Garrison 2-1, who are 20 points behind Boroughbridge in third place.

Cup holders Harrogate Squash and runners-up Moortown will face each other in the semi-final of the League's knock-out cup.

Harrogate reached the last four by beating Otley 5-0, while Moortown took a 4-1 victory against Nomads.

The cup victory mean Squash remain on course for a league and cup double. They currently head the First Division with 147 points, one ahead of Ilkley and five in front of Adel.

The second semi-final has yet to be decided. Quarter finals involving Ilkley and Scott Hall, as well as Chapel Allerton and Harlow, have been postponed.

Although Otley failed to win a rubber against Squash they did peg back the cup favourites in two encounters which went to five games.
