BRIDGE DOWN: Work to remove an old footbridge in Gateshead starts on Sunday, March 2. The borough council is pulling down the bridge across the A167 Durham Road, Low Fell. It will be replaced with a more disabled-friendly pedestrian crossing. The road will be closed between Albert Drive and Lowreys Lane from 5am on March 2, while the demolition takes place.

CRIME CASH: Cash grants of up to £1,000 are on offer to community groups in South Tyneside. The council has £20,000 to share out to groups under the Safer Communities Grants, which aim to reduce crime. The closing date for the first round of applications is Thursday.
