PUB landlords are being put on the alert for a bogus barman who talks his way into a job and then disappears with the takings.

The man, calling himself Simon Lee, most recently turned up at a pub near Leyburn, in Wensleydale, where he was hired as a barman.

But two days later, he disappeared with several hundred pounds of the pubs takings.

Police in the Dales community believe it is not the first time the man has used this method.

PC Paul Calvert said: "We believe this man has been stealing from pubs in this manner for several months and I want to warn landlords very strongly to be on guard.

"This man has discovered a successful method and he could strike anywhere across the country unless he is stopped."

The man is in his late 20s, about 5ft 6ins tall and of medium build. He has short, curly ginger hair, a Wiltshire accent, and one of his upper teeth is black and decayed.

He does not drink or smoke, dresses smartly and has spoken of having a wife and child.

When he stole from the Leyburn pub he was driving a white Peugeot 405, possibly H-registered, but it is thought he may change vehicles.

"He is not a great barman, but he is certainly a good enough talker to persuade people to give him a job. He is very plausible," said PC Calvert.

Pub landlords are now being put on alert along with the owners of hotels and B&Bs he may visit looking for accommodation.

Anyone who knows the man or is approached by him, is asked to contact Richmond CID on (01609) 783131.
