MOTORISTS faced severe delays on the region's two main roads yesterday morning.

Traffic travelling north on the A19 through the Tyne Tunnel faced a wait of about 25 minutes, while motorists travelling on the southbound carriageway found themselves caught up in 40-minute tailbacks.

A spokeswoman for the AA said the congestion was due to motorists trying to avoid lane closures on the Tyne Bridge while strengthening works are carried out.

On the A1 Western Bypass, a crash on the southbound carriageway caused long delays near the Bowes Incline public house.

A police spokeswoman said that this was due to a car colliding with a lorry which had broken down.

The accident happened at 5.50am and caused severe delays until it was removed at 7.10am.
