A RECYCLING scheme was given a kick-start yesterday when Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren and Premiership referee Jeff Winter gave it their full backing.

Stockton Borough Council's blue box recycling scheme will start in the Yarm, Eaglescliffe and Kirklevington areas.

Over the next 12 months, every household will receive a blue plastic box in which to recycle used bottles, jars, cans and textiles.

A separate reusable blue bag will also be provided for newspapers, magazines and junk mail.

The boxes will be collected fortnightly and the service is a partnership between the council and SWS, of Hartlepool.

Councillor Steve Nelson, the council's cabinet member for the environment, said: "We are delighted Steve and Jeff lent their support.

"We do not want people to just turf out their rubbish, we want them to realise the importance of recycling and just how easy it is to be green.

"We welcome everyone to pitch in and support the scheme."
