Durham City Harriers Shaun Moralee, 17, of Langley Park scored a magnificent victory in his first Harriers League as a senior at the Durham Pine Cross Country at Blaydon.

In the handicapped race over 8.7klm Shaun went with the leading group from the start and at about 3klms dropped his main rivals in the race with a smooth acceleration of pace which drew him farther and father away to win convincingly by 59 seconds in a very good time of 30.17, which was the fifth fastest time of the day.

Other Harriers: Alan Rowell (23, 34.45); Peter Clark (62, 35.38), Elwyn Baldwin (73, 35.51); Francis Turner (79, 35.58); Ian Crampton (86, 31.05). Team fourth with 166 pioints. (Others to finish were Geoff Watson (90, 33.40); Gary Shield (97, 36.17); Gary Coulter (138, 37.22); Andrew Billett (167, 38, 19); Geoff Davis (185m 36.44); Glen Malvern (236, 43.44).

Meanwhile, further success came in the women's race where Caroline Ratcliffe (6, 19.51) led the women to a fine team victory with Debbie Hales (10, 20.21); and Louise Trainor (11, 20.29), scoring the team win with 37 points, Val Hancock was also backing up the team and finished 28th in 23.08 over 5klms.

In the Under-15 Boys (3.4klms) Daniel Garbutt had a fine race finishing second in a very good time of 13.00 while Kirsty Walker slowly getting back to race fitness finished 20th in 15.40.
