Under 17 Inter-County Championships Stage Two

Durham and Cleveland Under-17 County squash team finished in bottom position in last weekend's Inter-County Championships Stage Two at Manchester Northern.

The weekend got off to the worst possible start when County No.1 Lee Skinner from Aycliffe was forced to pull out of the weekend due to illness. The rest of the team all have to move up one place and against strong opposition from Cheshire, Nottinghamshire and Cumbria the young and relatively inexperienced side from Durham and Cleveland were no match for the opposition.

Aycliffe's Graham Johnson had to play three nationally ranked players at No.1 string and was singled out by team coach Bill West as playing magnificent squash over the two days and was unlucky to lose both Saturday games 3/2, going down 10/9 in the fifth game against Cheshire's Thomas Javenard in the mornings first game.

Nunthorpe's Richard Collins was also given special praise by coach West for giving 100 per cent effort and was again unlucky not to come away without at least one win. Darlington's Andrew Scott moved up from the Under-15 County side to face older and more experienced opposition and acquitted himself well taking the only other game for the Durham and Cleveland side.
