POLICE are trying to track down the passengers on a bus which dragged an elderly woman through a city centre.

Jenny Spedding, 86, from Sherburn Hill, near Durham, was killed as she crossed the road near the exit to the bus station on Durham's North Road, at about 12.15pm on Monday.

She was struck by the rear of a bus and dragged almost half a mile to Crossgate Peth, where she was thrown clear on a bend near St Margaret's Health Centre.

Police say that, as a result of appeals in the media, one of five passengers on the bus at the time of the accident has come forward. Police want to speak to the others.

All of them had left the Arriva bus, on route 44 to Hamilton Row, near Crook, before it was eventually stopped four miles from the bus station, in Ushaw Moor.

They or any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact police on 0191-386 4929.
