AN empty shop in Bedale has been brought back into use with the help of a £5,943 grant.

A designer furniture showroom now occupies what was once a gift shop in the town's Market Place.

The grant is the first to be awarded from the Bedale Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme, known as Hers.

The three-year funding package - made up of English Heritage, North Yorkshire County Council and Hambleton District Council cash - aims to help bring disused buildings back to life.

The first project has seen what used to be Molly Auton's gift shop totally rejuvenated.

The 19th Century shop front and upper floor windows have been repaired and the front elevation re-rendered. The warehouse building at the rear of the property has also been repaired.

The Hers scheme is attempting to breathe new life into old commercial properties in towns and villages across England.

Anyone owning a commercial property in Bedale and interested in grant aid can call either Tony Robinson at Hambleton District Council (01609) 767054, or Ronnie Robertson at North Yorkshire County Council on (01609) 532528.
