A Darlington couple celebrated 65 years of married life.

Jim and May Cansfield, of Hargreave Terrace, met when they lived in Ryhope, near Sunderland. They were married in 1938.

Their daughter, Joyce Moore, said: "They met when they were walking down the street and my dad bumped into mum and they got chatting.

"At the time he was a blacksmith and she was a nurse at the children's hospital.

"They still think the world of each other and they are extremely close."

The couple, who are in their eighties, moved to Darlington in 1940 and Mr Cansfield set up a fish merchant business.

He and his new wife were separated during the war years when Mr Cansfield joined the thousands of young men called up to fight. He faced the enemy at a number of places including Dunkirk.

After the war Mr Cansfield ran a busy general store in Nickstream Lane, Cockerton. He retired more than 20 years ago.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with their four children, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
