Arthur Crossling, head of the long-established Scarborough painting and decorating business A C Crossling, has died at the age of 86.

His business also had interests in Sunderland and Middlesbrough. He was a Second World War veteran who was awarded the Pacific Star, the Burma Star and the Battle of Britain Medal. He served as a rear gunner in a Wellington bomber and also spent three years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. He was a former president of Scarborough Lions Club.

BODY FOUND: The body of a man has been found in a car in Scarborough's Marine Drive. The middle-aged man, who has not been named, is believed to have come from Humberside. A length of hose was found leading from the exhaust into the car. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

LORRY PARK: An overnight lorry park opens today at Murton, on the outskirts of York. It will provide parking for up to 30 lorries.

ROAD CLOSURES: Parts of Dodsworth Avenue and Mill Lane, in York, are to be closed to traffic on Sunday to allow carriageway works to be carried out.

BOSS DIES: Ted Copeman, who was Scarborough's head postmaster for many years, has died at 87. He started working for the Post Office as a messenger boy when he was 14.

BIRD CENTRE: A bird of prey centre has opened at Lightwater Valley, near Ripon. The facility will be run by Global Falconry. The centre has a golden eagle, eagle owls, sparrowhawks and kestrels.

TRAFFIC MOVE: Changes are to be made to the sequencing of the traffic lights on the A59 at the bottom of the High Street, in Knaresborough, in an effort to speed up the traffic.
