FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze in a set of steel buildings at Skelton Industrial Estate on Saturday, at 4.30pm.

Crews from Skelton, Saltburn and Redcar turned out to douse the flames but the corrugated metal was severely damaged by the intense heat. Two hose crews were used to get the blaze at Hill Avenue under control.

ARTS WORKSHOP: Family art workshops will be held at Douglas Street Community Centre, in Middlesbrough, tomorrow. Children from nearby schools will be working with perspex and other materials alongside artist Jane Gower, and adults have been invited to join in. The event will take place from 11am to noon and from 2pm to 3pm, and is part of a Middlesbrough Council campaign to get more people involved in arts and crafts.

THEATRE CASH: A charity performance at Middlesbrough Theatre has raised £1,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research. Children aged from two to 18 who attend the Bradley School of Dance, in Great Ayton, performed dances in styles including tap, ballet and jive. Last month's event was so successful that principal Margaret Connelly has booked the venue for a similar show next year.

MUSIC FESTIVAL: More than 600 children will take part in Middlesbrough Competitive Music Festival. Three-hour heats will be held at Cambridge Road Baptist Church from 9.30am on Friday and will feature woodwind and recorders. On Saturday, a vocal session will be held at Hall Garth School, in Acklam, from 9.30am, while a piano session will be held at St David's School, Acklam, at the same time. Admission is £1.50.

WAR PROTEST: Students will be voicing their objections to war against Iraq by staging a protest outside the Bede Sixth Form College, in Billingham, on Wednesday. At 1pm, pupils will walk out of lessons and on to surrounding streets, which will be closed to traffic for the afternoon.
