STARS from TV's Byker Grove went to Thirsk at the weekend to help open a youth cafe in the town centre.

The project was inspired people who replied to a survey on what they felt the town lacked.

Since then, they have won financial backing from the Thirsk Regeneration Initiative, Connexions York and North Yorkshire, the Nationwide Trust, Thirsk Community Education and the Churches Together organisation.

The Thirsk Clock opened on Saturday and is named after the building in the market square.

Facilities will include Internet facilities. The Thirsk Clock will also be a youth club in the evening, staffed by youth workers and volunteers.

Byker Grove stars also hope to return to help with a Changing-Rooms-style makeover in May.
