WORK has started on a £1.5m housing development resulting from two years of consultations.

The Three Rivers Housing group has spent the period discussing options for housing to regenerate Thornley, east Durham, with councillors and residents.

Now, following Government investment, it has started building 20 bungalows and houses to provide much-needed modern and affordable accommodation at Thornlaw South.

Clare Hepworth, chairwoman of the group, said: "We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Easington District Council, the residents, and other partners."

The development, which will be completed in October, is planned as the first of a two-phase housing programme in Thornley.

Three Rivers Housing has applied for funding for 20 properties in the second phase.

The organisation is also helping locals play a more active part in the village's regeneration through the New Thornley Partnership and Thornley Community Association.

Councillor Colin Reynolds, of Easington District Council, said: "Housing has been top priority in Thornley for a while, and it is great to see work starting to improve the quality of life for people in the community."
