A COLLEGE'S "Fame Academy" is getting ready to rock in Darlington's French twin town of Amiens.

A party of 26 musicians from Darlington College of Technology will travel to the Somme region of France on Sunday, for a five-day tour.

The group, which is made up of first year students in rock and pop, are putting the final touches to material written by colleagues on the second year of the AVCE course.

As a dress rehearsal, they are warming up this week by performing in schools in Darlington, including Greenfield, Haughton and Eastbourne comprehensives.

Senior tutor in performing arts Andrew Meadowcroft said: "It is creative and it is work experience. How else would they get to work on the road?"

As well as performing, the students are given production roles.

"They form themselves into a company while the lecturers take a back seat," he said.

"They are given the venue but have to kit it out themselves. The production takes the form of theatre, dance and music. It looks at street violence and what is acceptable. It is non-language and uses music, rap and images."
