THE Richmondshire Orchestra presents a programme of broadly classical music at a spring concert in the King's Head Hotel, Richmond, on Thursday.

In the first half, Mozart's Don Giovanni overture will be contrasted with an overture in the classical style composed in 1955 by Stanley Black, famous for his music to the film Summer Holiday, and Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in which the orchestra will welcome an old boy of Richmond School, Grant Golding, as soloist.

The second half also features Golding in a premire performance of Mists by local composer, John Dodd.

He is principal horn in the orchestra and a former army band master who now teaches brass instruments in County Durham schools. The work, inspired by poetry of the First World War, depicts two lost souls attempting to find each other. It is a short atmospheric work.

The concert ends with Mozart's final symphony The Jupiter.

Tickets are £4 for adults, available from orchestra members or on the door; children free.

Mr Golding, who was born in 1976 in North Yorkshire, began playing the trumpet at the age of eight with Clifford Wright and soon progressed to local brass bands. His first solo appearance was at the age of ten.

At Richmond School, he developed his interest in solo playing by organising and performing in recitals with other pupils, and this led to numerous recitals in churches and stately homes in North Yorkshire and as guest soloist with many of the local amateur and youth orchestras.

In 1995, he took a place at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where he studied with Nigel Boddice and John Gracie.

Mr Golding graduated in 1999 with a BMus (Hons) and, after gaining a handful of awards and scholarships including the Countess of Munster Musical Trust award and Barcapel Foundation Scholarship, he went back to further his studies and gained an MMus postgraduate performers qualification.

He has also been awarded the David A Knox prize and Governors' recital prize for brass chamber music.

As a student, Mr Golding featured as a soloist with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Academy orchestra, wind orchestra, chamber orchestra and the Academy brass. He also gave recitals in many venues, including Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Merchants' House, Harewood House near Leeds, St Martin in the Fields, London, and the University of Memphis Tennessee.

Since graduating, a busy schedule has seen successful solo appearances in Chicago, Memphis, the Middle East and the Netherlands, including guest soloist with the Royal Oman Air Force Band. Last year, he took up a post as brass tutor for Falkirk council which has led to many educational concerts with Legends Brass.

Mr Golding is also a regular freelance player with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Opera, Dunedin Consort, Heisenberg Ensemble, Ruthven Festival Orchestra and the Salon Orchestra.
