A BOGUS caller posing as a water company official stole £100 from an elderly woman.

Last night police repeated a warning to people to be cautious about callers and always ask for identification.

The 84-year-old woman invited the man into her home in West Auckland, just after 2pm on Monday.

He told her he wanted to check the water supply and they went into the bathroom where he kept the tap running. Meanwhile, another man entered the house and stole the cash.

One man is described as being 6ft, of stocky build. The other was 5ft 9in and of thin build. Both men spoke with a local accent and were in their twenties.

Detective Constable Darren Philips, of Bishop Auckland police, appealed for witnesses, saying: "I also want to take this opportunity to remind people to be cautious and always ask for identification.''

Witnesses should contact Det Con Philips or Det Con Andrea Wood, at Bishop Auckland police station, on (01388) 603566.
