WOLVES have revived their interest in Newcastle United striker Carl Cort and are attempting to push through a loan deal ahead of today's Nationwide League deadline, writes Clive Hetherington.

Molineux boss Dave Jones was rebuffed by counterpart Sir Bobby Robson in a move to take Cort on temporary terms earlier this season.

At the time, Robson was anxious to see Cort recover full fitness on Tyneside after a series of serious injuries.

But now Robson admits he is tempted to let Cort, signed from Wimbledon for £7m nearly three years ago, lend his weight to Wolves' promotion cause.

"I'm thinking about it,'' said Robson, who is so well covered up front that he has already agreed to 19-year-old Michael Chopra joining Watford on a month's loan.

The England Under-20 international is expected to make his debut for the Hornets at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Chopra is also eligible for Watford's FA Cup semi-final with Southampton at Villa Park on April 13.

Meanwhile, Newcastle yesterday insisted that the Football League blocked new signing Darren Ambrose's proposed loan return to Ipswich because of a technicality over the Suffolk club being in administration.

The Magpies' chief operating officer Russell Cushing refuted Football League spokesman John Nagle's claim that the League had not intervened to prevent the move.

Cushing said: "The facts of the matter are that the Football League would not allow Darren to be loaned to Ipswich for a reason attached to Ipswich being in administration.''
