PROPOSALS for a care centre for autistic people to be set up in a village near Darlington look likely to gain approval next week.

Villagers had condemned plans by Castlebeck Care to establish a centre of excellence for the care of people with autism and communication problems, at the former Newbus Arms Hotel, in Neasham.

But Darlington Borough Council planning officers are supporting the proposal, and councillors are expected to give the scheme their approval when the plans are considered next Wednesday.

The 17th Century mansion, once a popular venue for weddings, was identified by Darlington company Castlebeck as an ideal location for such a development.

The care centre would cater for up to 18 people, aged 18 to 55, who would be referred by the NHS and social services.

Specialist staff would be available on a 24-hour basis and Castlebeck managers say that the proposed residents would be no danger to people living nearby.

An application has been made to the borough council for the change of use of the premises.

A report to councillors says: "It is the opinion of officers that the existing amenities currently enjoyed by neighbouring occupiers would not be adversely affected by the proposal, which is unlikely to generate any greater levels of noise."

it also says: "It is considered that the proposed use will not be any more intrusive than the current use in terms of impact on residential amenity"

The scheme had sparked concerns among local people, who took their fears up with parish councillors.

Letters of complaint to the borough council raised concerns about "the type of individuals cared for in the home" and an increase in traffic.

Protestors also say there are fears for the safety of Neasham residents and a decline in business at the nearby caravan park.

A decision will be made by Darlington Borough Council's planning applications committee, which meets at the town hall on Wednesday.

The Newbus Arms Hotel was closed last year amid controversy, as scores of couples were forced to make alternative wedding plans.
