FOUR events will be held in Bishop Auckland Market Place this year, in a drive to revitalise the town centre.

Wear Valley District Council has granted free use of the market place to the Town Centre Forum.

Town centre manager, Ken Wilson, said: "Getting people into the town for an enjoyable day, which I'm certain these will be, is key to increasing trade."

Events confirmed are a vintage car rally on July 2, from 6pm to 9.30pm, and a new car festival on July 25, from 10am to 4pm.

Craig Downs, communications manager at the council, said: "We are looking to actively raise the profile of Bishop Auckland. By helping to arrange these four market events we can put something extra into the town."

With the support of The Northern Echo's Shopping for a Future campaign, which champions the cause of small retail centres across South Durham, traders are pulling together to improve the prosperity of the town.

Many shops and cafes in Bishop Auckland are taking part in special offer days each Thursday, each offering shoppers different bargains as indicated in store.
