A PROJECT is underway to create a greener Middlesbrough and improve the environment, starting with a two-day tree planting programme.

The three-year scheme will increase the tree cover in the town to complement its social and economic regeneration.

"Increased woodland cover, applied on a significant scale with local participation and commitment, will help to ensure that Middlesbrough is a healthy and attractive place in which to live, work and invest in," said Pherenice Worsey-Buck project manager for Regeneration Through Environmental Action (React).

"Trees help to clean the air we breathe, screen industrial eyesores, buffer traffic noise and increase our contact with nature closer to home."

Over 1,000 native tree species are being planted by the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) at Riverside Park, Middlesbrough.
