A TOWN'S residents are being urged to shut out crime - literally.
Cleveland Police are concerned that as the lighter evenings tempt gardeners and DIY enthusiasts outside, thieves will target unsecured sheds and garages.
The force is offering to sell Middlesbrough residents heavy duty locks for garage doors at a discount, having already sold 400 of the devices.
The police are confident that the locks will play a major role in reducing thefts from outbuildings, which always spiral with the arrival of longer days.
With the contents of the average shed worth upwards of £1,700, crime prevention officers are also urging residents to install dusk-to-dawn lighting.
Middlesbrough crime prevention officer Mick McGravey said: "For just a little extra thought and a small amount of money you can get peace of mind that your garden or garage won't be the one thieves get into. Taking these simple anti-crime steps will probably save you money in the long run."
