An inquest was being held today into the deaths of two workers who were hit by 20,000 volts while they resurfaced a busy main road.

Frederick Cook, 38, and John Crimmins, 33, were found by their site manager on the westbound carriageway of the A66 between Greta Bridge and Bowes in County Durham last January.

Paramedics tried to revive one of them at the scene while the other man was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital but he was pronounced dead.

Mr Cook was from Abbots Way and Mr Crimmins from Stonethwaite, both in North Shields, Tyneside. The inquest was due to take place at Bishop Auckland Magistrates Court at 2pm.
