A COLLECTION of contemporary abstract works of art are to go on display at a North-East museum next month.

Meridiano de Greenwich is a collection of works by three English and three Spanish painters, and will go on show at the Bowes Museum, in Barnard Castle, County Durham from next Saturday unil June 1.

The museum has strong links with Spain and houses one of the largest collections of Spanish paintings in Britain.

The exhibition is on tour from the Conde Duque Gallery in Madrid.

Charlie Arnold, exhibitions assistant at the museum, said: "This is the first large-scale abstract painting exhibition to be held here and demonstrates appropriately the Bowes Museum's firm commitment to important contemporary artwork."

The exhibition would be displayed in a gallery next to the Bowes' Spanish painting collection. All three of the British artists involved in the project will be attending the opening, giving audiences in the North-East a chance to meet leading contemporary artists, said Mr Arnold.

The six artists featured in the exhibition are George Blacklock, Noel Forster, Trevor Sutton, Mariano de Blas, Luis Fega and Menchu Lamas.
