FOUR people have pleaded guilty to tax evasion after customs officials found more than 165,000 cigarettes in their baggage.
They had arrived on a flight from Lanzarote into East Midlands Airport, in the early hours of Monday, when they were stopped.
Christina McKinnon Hall, 32, from Royal Crescent, Fenham, Michael Johnson, 45, from Mary Agnes Street, Cox Lodge, Susan Johnson, 48, from Shaftoe Court, and Darren Wallace, 37, from Beal Green, Kenton Bar, all Newcastle, pleaded guilty at Coalville Magistrates' Court.
The court was told how customs officers found the cigarettes in their baggage and arrested them for evasion of tax duty amounting to more than £30,000.
They were bailed to appear at Leicester Crown Court on May 2 for sentencing.
