A TOURING theatre company, a museum and an author have been working together to give children an understanding of life in the Dales during the Second World War.

John Browning was an evacuee from Sunderland, who was sent to Redmire, North Yorkshire, 60 years ago.

His story, A Suitcase Full of Sorrows, has been adapted by Richmond's North Country Theatre, and Arts Desire and, during performances at the Dales Countryside Museum at Hawes, the cast used 1940s exhibits to add to the realism.

Even the former station platform outside the museum was used as a stage to bring to life the experiences of youngsters from towns and cities who were evacuated to the unfamiliar environment of the countryside.

In all, 340 children from schools in Darlington, Middleham, Reeth, Hawes, Bainbridge, Spennithorne, Ripon and Hampsthwaite saw the play.

Museum manager, Fiona Rosher, said: "This has been a fantastic event, full of excitement and learning for the pupils who attended."
