A STUDENT from Stockton has been awarded a scholarship in recognition of her outstanding sporting achievements.

Zoe Bayne was presented with a Carnegie Sports Scholarship to Leeds Metropolitan University by Sports Minister Richard Caborn and Olympic javelin thrower Mick Hill.

Zoe was a member of the England ice hockey squad in the last world and national championships, and has been playing for the full senior squad since she was 15.

She said: "As there is no funding for ice hockey, the money obviously makes a big difference. The stress of travelling to Nottingham for international training every other weekend has been taken away and I can now fully concentrate on my sport."

By providing £1,000-worth of general, technical and financial support, the scheme gives students the opportunity to improve their sporting performance while continuing with their academic studies.

Mr Caborn said: "It is crucial we develop talented young sports people and give them the maximum opportunity to go on and succeed on the bigger stage. This scholarship will give Zoe access to the support, coaching and facilities needed to make a big name for herself in the future and I look forward to following her progress."

Zoe has been allocated a sports mentor who works with academic tutors to monitor and guide her academic and sporting progress throughout the year.
